Dear Delegates,

I am excited to welcome you to the Special Committee of BERMUN 2024!

In the Special Committee, we will be focusing on the topic of Encouraging Technoglobalism as a Means to Overcome Nationalism

Global citizenship is a concept based on a shared humanity between all people, which directly contrasts with nationalism, which frequently involves a perceived superiority of one identity group. Competing interests and the belief that one group’s needs are more important than another, extends to technology among states, heightening tension between countries through research and innovation competition. Countries have to take responsibility and step away from their nationalistic aims and consider others in the global community.

Technoglobalism was first thought of in the late 20th century and is a concept moving away from the strictly national ideals of many countries moving out of the Cold War. Instead, technoglobalism hopes to create an environment for countries to share information and cooperate, as has been done in several scientific masterpieces such as the International Space Station or the Large Hadron Collider. Through collaborative work, research can be drastically enhanced and promoted, and help reduce nationalism.

On a personal note, I am a student at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. Apart from MUN, I enjoy playing instruments, listening to music, reading, art, and natural sciences.

I have participated in several MUN conferences as a delegate, and this will be my second one as a chair. The program has taught me personally to practice speaking up and become better and more confident in public speaking, so I hope you can all share this experience. To that end, I encourage all delegates to actively participate in debate. Speaking up in debate for first-time delegates can seem like a daunting experience at first, but it can be very rewarding.

I look forward to meeting you all!

Sincerely,

Lioba Ochsenreither
