Dear Judges and Advocates of the ICC,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the International Criminal Court at BERMUN 2024!

The ICC will be deliberating over The Prosecutor v Ahmed Harun. The defendant, a Sudanese government official, faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his involvement in Darfur, Sudan between 2003 and 2008. Alongside the Janjaweed Militia, he knew of and encouraged attacks centered around exterminating targeted minorities. Global citizens have the fundamental right to be free of subjection to violence, torture, and abuse while having the responsibility not to inflict such extreme measures upon others. The case highlights the shared responsibility to hold individuals accountable while upholding universal human rights standards for all.

On a more personal note, I am currently a 12th grader in the Abitur program at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. In my (admittedly limited) free time, one can usually find me practicing violin, baking with friends, traveling, and listening to Taylor Swift. My future aspirations include a PhD in some yet-to-be-determined STEM field, learning to skydive, and traveling to Mars. This is my 6th year in the MUN program and my eleventh conference as a Student Officer.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via bermun.icc@gmail.com if you have any questions while preparing for the conference. Until then, I wish all of you an enjoyable preparation time!

Sincerely,

Zeya Bespolka

President of the ICC
