Dear Delegates,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at this year's BERMUN2! In this committee, we will be discussing the issue of “Ensuring Equal Access to International Markets”. This is a vital topic that intersects both the mandate of ECOSOC and the conference theme “Rising Nationalism: Fortifying International Institutions.” This is due to the fact that Member States tend to hinder cooperation in international institutions when they become more nationalistic. Yet, international institutions, like the World Trade Organisation (WTO), are vital when it comes to the regulation of international markets.  Additionally, protectionism as a nationalism-linked economic strategy can take the form of trade barriers and challenges, which could make it more difficult to achieve the goal of ensuring fair access to international markets.

As for my MUN experience, I have been participating in MUN Conferences for the past three years and have attended eight conferences so far. I have had the honour of being part of the Student Officer team on multiple occasions. These experiences have taught me the importance of diplomacy, communication, and teamwork.

In order for this conference to be a success, I, alongside my fellow Presidents Jonas Bordet and Mycah Hardister, will strive to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere in the committee in which everyone can participate and contribute to the discussion. In light of this, I would like to take this opportunity  to ask you to please research the topic and your country’s corresponding policy thoroughly so that the committee runs as smoothly and effectively as possible.

On a more personal note, I play tennis and am part of my school’s swim team. Additionally, I play the recorder, the double bass and the trombone, with which I participate in my school's orchestra. In my rather limited free time, I love to read, bake and travel. I am currently 15 years old and in the 10th grade at the German School of Pretoria, South Africa.

I look forward to meeting and working with everyone at the conference to create a meaningful and impactful experience.

Best regards,

Johanna Kyrieleis
