The International Criminal Court (ICC) tries individuals charged with crimes of particular international gravity. The four crimes which the court has jurisdiction over are: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. Its principal mandate includes settling legal disputes brought to it by nations or the United Nations Security Council. Ensuring legal justice globally is at the heart of the ICC.
This year, BERMUN will, with the BERMUN International Criminal Court, simulate this renowned Court. Our simulation is a challenging forum and a “crash course” in international law making it an ideal opportunity for students who are interested in law. All members of the ICC will learn to analyze legal evidence and hone their rhetorical skills. The intimacy of our small “committee” will enable participants to engage in the Court’s proceedings.
To make this year’s endeavor yet another success, dedication before and during the conference is crucial. For BERMUN 2022, we have selected the case The Prosecutor vs. Omar Hassan Ahmad Al Bashir concerning the alleged crimes of murder, rape, and torture of villagers in Darfur, Sudan. The alleged breaches examined in this case regard the attacks done by President Al Bashir in Sudan during the time period of 2003-2008. The Prosecution charged President Al Bashir with allegedly having committed crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide during this time period which are in violation of the Rome Statute.
The BERMUN ICC is composed of 15 to 18 independent judges and two pairs of advocates. Additionally, three student officers, one President and two Assistant Presidents, lead the simulation. During the conference, the advocates argue their case through speeches and the presentation of factual and legal evidence. The judges deliberate upon the information presented to them and compose a verdict expressing their judgment. Student Officers advise the advocates in the pre-conference preparation and assist them in identifying and organizing their key arguments. In addition, we guide the judges in their deliberation, help them evaluate legal documents, and facilitate deliberation.
The ICC Student Officer team encourages any participating BERMUN students to take advantage of this unique opportunity. For any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by email at email@example.com.
