Dear Delegates,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to this year's BERMUN Special Conference (SpC)! Regarding this year's theme, “Building a Rules-Based Order to Withstand Authoritarianism”, it is crucial to acknowledge the role that international cooperation plays in upkeeping the standards of democracy, the principles of sovereignty, and the respect of fundamental rights and freedoms.
Our committee's focus on “Fostering Free and Independent Media to Combat Autocracy,” and “Ensuring Free and Fair Elections from External Interference” could not be more relevant. Both campaigns that spread fake or misleading information lead to confusion and distrust and governments that restrict press freedom and obstacles to responsible and factual reporting, are contributing to the decline of democratic structures in many countries. In authoritarian regimes, such tactics are used systematically and operate in ways that international law struggles to keep up with, particularly through propaganda sponsored by state or non-state actors, cyber interference, and political manipulation. As a Student Officer at BERMUN, I hope to contribute to an atmosphere that's both engaging and participatory. I am especially excited to hear your perspectives on how the international community can tackle these issues in ways that uphold democratic principles and values.
To get the most out of this conference, let’s come prepared, speak with purpose, and listen respectfully to others. Our committee thrives when every delegate brings their unique perspectives to the table.
On a more personal note, I am a 16 year old student at Anatolia High School in Thessaloniki, Greece. This BERMUN will be my 9th conference, and first time as a Student Officer. Outside of MUN, I enjoy dancing, reading, watching movies, as well as traveling, going to the gym, and cooking. Academically, I am passionate about the sciences, especially chemistry and physics, but I am equally interested in global politics, international relations, and languages.
I look forward to meeting each one of you in November!
Sincerely,
Anna Leonidi
