Co-Chair

of the

MS MUN

International School of Hamburg

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the Middle School MUN (MS MUN) Committee! I’m very excited to co-chair this committee along with my fellow chairs Barry Tabachnikoff and Mattis Möbius. Being able to watch younger students transform into articulate delegates reminds me that we are doing more than just simulating the body in which we place our hopes for the future; we are shaping its legacy.

Let me start by introducing myself: I'm sixteen, and an eleventh grader at the International School of Hamburg. I’m from Barcelona, but I’ve lived in Germany for most of my life, also having resided in Spain, France, and China. This is my first BERMUN, but my sixth conference overall since I joined my school’s club in ninth grade. MUN is a huge part of my life, but other passions of mine include music, theatre, and journalism. I'm also a passionate vinyl collector.

This year’s conference theme, ‘Building a Rules-Based Order to Withstand Authoritarianism,’ reflects the urgency with which the international community must act in order to enhance legal frameworks to comprehensively dismantle the systems that enable the rise and persisting existence of such forms of government. Authoritarianism often thrives under uniform, so we must protect diversity. This is where our topics come in, as “Ensuring the freedom of speech” and “Ensuring equal participation of women in politics” are crucial steps to foster political diversity in a community, making it more difficult for authoritarianism to arise.

I've been involved in MUN for a long time, and I've encountered a variety of committees and topics that have required collaboration and lots of sacrifices. My advice for making the most out of this conference is to practice the art of compromise. Every delegation will have conditions for certain solutions, so being ready to justify your clauses and adapt them as the debate progresses is imperative to succeed. Most of all, let’s not be afraid to take a passionate stance—it's what makes a debate memorable.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in November!

Sincerely,

Clara Morales Alegret
