Dear Delegates,
I am truly excited to be the Assistant President in the Security Council during this year‘s BERMUN conference alongside Frida Katzenstein.
As our conference theme in 2025 is Building a Rules-Based Order to Withstand Authoritarianism, recognizing the dangers of an authoritarian regime is essential. To fight this, international aid is needed and clear rules have to be implemented that guide nations to a more citizen friendly system.
An example of an authoritarian regime, Syria, will be debated in this year's Security Council, where a 14 year civil war has split the nation and a rules-based order must urgently be established. The country was led by Bashar al-Assad, who ruled by oppressing other ethnicities and political enemies. Rebel Groups such as the Free Syrian Army (FSA) set their goal to stand up against the regime and overthrow the government. They succeeded in December 2024, forcing al-Assad to flee to Russia. International relations continue being complex with players like the USA, Russia, Turkey, Saudi-Arabia and the EU supporting different sides. Solutions to the conflict have to be introduced immediately, to finally find order in Syria as soon as possible.
More personally, I am a 16 year old 11th grader at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. I enjoy doing all kinds of sports in my free time, as well as hanging out with my friends on weekends. This will only be my 2nd time chairing a conference, making it very exciting. Prior to this conference, I also attended BERMUN last year and BERMUN 2 in the beginning of this year.
I am looking forward to meeting you and working together with you in November!
Felix Strigel
Assistant President of the Security Council
