Dear Delegates of the Disarmament Committee,
It is my absolute honor to welcome you to this year’s BERMUN conference!
The theme of this year’s conference, "Building a Rules-Based Order to Withstand Authoritarianism", highlights the need for international cooperation in maintaining stability and fairness in an increasingly volatile world. As global tensions rise, upholding and respecting international law is more crucial than ever.
Our committee's topic, "Preventing Militarization in Outer Space," is at the forefront of this challenge. Space, once a symbol of exploration and scientific progress, is now at risk of becoming the next battleground. Many countries are eager to harness the potential that space has to offer and could become the next territory that countries will fight for to make or break their military advantages. With advancing technologies and geopolitical tension, the weaponization of space could undermine global security and set a dangerous model for future conflicts. As delegates, it is your responsibility to establish frameworks that preserve space for peaceful use and prevent an arms race beyond our atmosphere.
On a more personal note, I am a 16-year-old proud German-American citizen living in Berlin. I have been attending the John F. Kennedy School since the age of 5, and since then, I have expressed a strong interest in world politics. I spend my free time playing baseball, hanging out with friends, occasionally playing video games, and reading. I believe that safeguarding space from militarization is a critical issue that demands urgent discussion and decisive action. I look forward to meeting you all as we tackle these challenges together and, hopefully, end the conference with a strong and effective solution!
Sincerely,
Hamilton TurnerCo-Chair of the Disarmament Committee
