Dear Delegates,
Welcome to the United Nations Security Council! I am Kerem Korucan, and I will have the great pleasure of serving as Assistant President of the SC this upcoming BERMUN.
When we meet, we will discuss the crucial topic, “The Situation in Syria”. As a person who lives close to the issue at hand (Türkiye), the agenda surrounding Syria could not have been explained better with the theme “Building A Rules-Based Order to Withstand Autocracy”. Syria had long been under the rule of the Assad family, which once gave the country hope for a future democratic environment but ended up in a ten-year-long civil war. Although in the last year Bashar Al-Assad has been overthrown by the Syrian people, there is still a long way to go for the government, as a new system of rules must be established to ensure democracy and justice in the nation.
I encourage all of us to do thorough research on the issue and especially consider the humanitarian aspect of the issue. Now that the war has for the most part ended, displaced people and refugees must be of utmost priority for Syria to prosper under a new government. Let’s write detailed clauses, prepare enthusiastic speeches, and enjoy a fruitful and enjoyable debate.
On a more personal note, I will be a senior student at Robert College by the time I meet all of you. I’ve been doing MUN for just about three years now and have had four chairing experiences. I am very interested in movies and series, so we can always talk about our favorite shows or movies at the conference.
I look forward to meeting you all and getting to know each other better in November. Take care.
All the best,
Kerem Korucan
