Dear Delegates,
Welcome to BERMUN 2025! I’m thrilled to chair the upcoming conference alongside Jacob!
The topics of the Political Committee (PC) are “Addressing Neo-Colonialism ” and “Combating Terrorism and Its State Sponsors,” which directly relate to this year’s theme, “Building a Rules-Based Order to Withstand Autocracy”. Neo-Colonialism is detrimental to a society, as it directly undermines sovereignty and self-determination—the cornerstones of such an order. Neo-colonialism perpetuates economic exploitation, political manipulation, and dependency, often allowing powerful states or multinational corporations to control the resources and governance of weaker nations. This form of modern imperialism enables authoritarian regimes to expand their influence and destabilize global balance by imposing unfair conditions on less powerful countries, which weakens their ability to resist external control. Combating neo-colonialism involves empowering nations through development, promoting fair trade practices, and ensuring accountability for those who exploit weaker states, thereby fortifying a global system based on equality, justice, and respect for national sovereignty.
To make this BERMUN conference as productive and rewarding as possible, I encourage all delegates to thoroughly research the given topics and your country's policy to better understand both the global challenges and local contexts in relation to the topics and the theme. Understanding both global challenges and local contexts will help you craft innovative clauses and actively engage in debate.
On a more personal note, I am currently a senior at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. This will be my 11th BERMUN Conference and my sixth as a chair. When I’m not debating, you can find me walking my dog, spending time with friends, or boxing.
Sincerely,
Mycah Hardister
